Holden Colorado MY14 range released
Speaking at the launch of the 2014 range (on October 21), Philip Brook, Executive Director of Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing, said Holden's focus to capitalise on the hugely popular LCV and SUV market continued to be a priority.
"We've put a lot of time and effort in ensuring we delivered a real contender and serious competitor in the LCV and SUV market," Brook said.
"The latest Colorado range ensures this tough vehicle continues to stack up against the rest and offers consumers a serious 4WD, with the latest technology, that's a workhorse, a family vehicle or is just as at home on Australia's most rugged terrain."
Powertrain
The main change of note on the 2014 Colorado range is the addition of a new Duramax 2 diesel engine. This 2.8 litre unit offers more power and torque to both the SUV and truck (Holden's name for the Colorado ute) when teamed with the automatic transmission.
When paired with the auto, the new Duramax 2 diesel generates 147kW of power and a maximum 500Nm of torque, one of the best in class. The new engine not only delivers more maximum torque, but increases torque across the entire curve.
Enhanced automatic transmission calibration includes shift stabilisation in uphill and downhill modes and grade braking control preventing unnecessary shifting between gears when travelling uphill, and suitable shifting when travelling downhill to minimise braking.
Also new for 2014 is a new six-speed manual transmission, replacing the five-speed as the standard manual across the Colorado truck range.
When teamed with the six-speed, the new Duramax 2 diesel produces the same 147kW of power as the auto and a maximum 440Nm of torque. Torque is now available all the way from 1600rpm to 2800rpm, ideal for cargo and towing applications.
Regardless of transmission choice, fuel economy remains the same or slightly improved across the range.
Chassis Control Systems
Also introduced on the MY14 Colorado are new chassis control systems, such as Trailer Sway Control and Hill Start Assist, which are available across the entire Colorado range. Additionally, a Descent Control System has been added on all Colorado utes except the DX.
Trailer Sway control detects any towing instability, activates the brakes and reduces engine torque, ensuring complete peace of mind when pulling a trailer or caravan.
Hill Start Assist automatically engages when a gradient is detected and acts to hold the Colorado stationary after the brake is released to give the driver time to apply the throttle.
Descent Control System is a variable speed system that allows for a smooth and controlled hill descent in rough terrain by controlling the speed of the vehicle without the need for brake input from the driver.
Colorado still boasts exceptional towing ability, with the utes able to pull an unbeaten 3.5 tonne load.
Safety
Colorado utes are equipped with a comprehensive array of safety features and systems. Colorado Crew Cab variants carry a five star ANCAP safety rating.
New on the 2014 models are front side impact airbags as standard - LX, LT and LTZ models only. The LTZ-spec ute also gets Rear Park Assist and a rear camera.
Standard features include driver and front passenger airbags, full length side curtain airbags, ESC, ABS with EBD and Hydraulic Brake Assist.
Infotainment
The upper level LX, LT and LTZ-spec utes feature a seven-inch colour touchscreen and class-leading entertainment features.
Holden's MyLink allows drivers to connect to Bluetooth and access apps for their favourite music, news, entertainment and navigation.
Bluetooth connectivity means the touchscreen can be used to wirelessly stream audio files for playback from a paired mobile phone or Bluetooth device allowing access to 1000 contacts and missed or recent call history.
Embedded apps include Pandora, Stitcher and TuneIn, allowing owners to create their own personal stations, stream their favourite podcasts, radio shows and news.
Added for 2014 is BringGo, a navigation app that provides access to 3D maps, turn-by-turn directions, points of interest, emergency contacts and more. Unlike other phone-based map solutions, BringGo does not require a 3G connection, unless performing a Google places search.
iPhone users can also use Siri Eyes Free Mode via a paired compatible Apple smartphone to ask Siri to select and play music, hear and compose a text message, read notifications and add reminders.
Accessories
With the new models come new accessories, including an alloy SuperBar, steel bullbar, black nudge and sports bars and a reverse camera as well as updated packs of grouped accessories.
